Rainforest in Coburg
A delightful new garden room needed a garden to surround it. Our brief was to design a rainforest garden that was reminiscent of Northern Queensland, with views out to the garden from almost every angle. We were fortunate to have a north facing aspect with an existing olive and lemon tree that could form the back drop for the design. This is a very simple concept, a room that is essentially a pod with a small connecting corridor to the original house. It gave us fern gullies to fill between the house and the garden room, a narrow north garden with windows to the floor and the paved courtyard.
Eventually the walls of the garden will be covered by evergreen climbers, and a native Tristaniopsis will shade the hot western sun, and create a lovely canopy for summer entertaining.
A rainforest in Coburg, with cold tolerant plants that will thrive in Melbourne’s cooler climate.
A water tank and surface drip irrigation has been installed. This garden will need attention in Autumn and Spring, with a little hand weeding and training of the climbers in between visits, so a low maintenance garden it is.
